It was dark outside. Night had come. Heinz must have heard about my escape from the Forsthaus by now because Werner must have reported what had happened there. I had put him in a difficult situation. According to Schwalbe, he had guaranteed that I would not run away—and yet things turned out differently. He was probably wondering where I could be right now. I could try to make an attempt to find him, for example, by reporting to the nearest police station. But then I would lose my freedom, and everything about me would be decided by others again. And I really did not like that.

I also couldn’t explain the whole confusing situation to some random policeman. But what if I asked to speak only to Inspector Schwalbe of the Criminal Police? Yet, I couldn’t tell him everything that had happened, either. As a suspect, I would certainly be questioned in detail—and this time not in a friendly manner—but Richard Yaremski had gagged me. My honest confession would not sink him, and the consequences of crossing him could be serious.

I also did not know how I should view the strange contacts of the Inspector with former Stasi officers. Who were they? They could be the kind who, after reunification, switched their loyalty to the new, enlarged homeland. But they could also be those who, after being removed from service and influence, bitter and angry, longed for the old order. Who would Schwalbe himself be then—benefiting from their informal help as he did?

Glückspilz—whatever his name was—seemed to be reconciled to the new situation. He probably remembered the communist times in the way that functionaries of the Third Reich in democratic Germany viewed their Nazi past: an irreversible, inevitable present, and now an inglorious past.

One thing was certain for me: I had to stay in hiding, this time on my own. I didn’t know how to explain this to these young people who came from another world and didn’t really understand what their elders had gone through.

“Erjan, Susanne,” I began in a principled tone. “I’ll be honest with you. I care deeply about finding your mother, or at least finding out what had happened to her.” I turned to the girl. “However, I am in a lot of trouble myself, about which I can’t say much right now. I don’t know if your mom’s disappearance has anything to do with my situation. It is too late to do anything tonight, but I have a plan for tomorrow.”

I had come to the conclusion that among all the contacts I could count on, I had only Roman left. Maybe he’ll come up with something. The situation was awkward.

“While looking for your mom, have you contacted Ferdinna?” I asked, not knowing how to refer to him when speaking to the girl. After all, he was her mother’s first husband.

She shook her head slowly, pressing her lips together.

“No, I only talked to my father. He didn’t know anything, but he promised to help. Maybe he even tried.
